One Night Stand and its Meanings

There are notions which bear the same name but represent totally different notions which almost stand in opposition with each other: sinful and innocent, bitter and sweet, bad and good (depends on views and attitudes though) etc.

'One night stand' originally meant single night theatre performance while nowadays it is in the majority of cases referred to a single sexual encounter of the two people who either don't know each other or has never had anything sensual between them. One thing is for sure – one night stand isn't meant to be continued, not that it's ever continued of course.

Now you see how excitingly the two different concepts coexist within the boundaries of one expression – one name. They are interrelated regarding the shades of meaning of course, but as for the spheres of usage and 'practice' they are just too far away from each other i.e. the concepts from two different spheres – artistic and wickedly sensual one. It's not that the former can't suggest sinfulness, it's just that the latter scarcely prompts artistic approach.

Though one night stands can be followed by certain drama of course – especially if one of the partners is eager to make the pleasure go on and another one is eager to stop encountering. In any case, now that you know or have refreshed in your memory that the phrase one-night stand has two meanings, you are perfectly sure which of them suits you better – either watching the theatrically artistic or taking part in the wickedly sinful one instead. Or who knows, maybe you are into both.
